Kerr Lake, NC — This past weekend (4/18-20/2025) delivered perfect conditions, close racing, and camaraderie for a small but enthusiastic fleet of Weta trimaran sailors who gathered for a memorable outing at Kerr Lake.

Three sailors arrived Friday afternoon, wasting no time rigging their boats and heading out for a spirited session in Beaufort 4 winds. With steady breezes and flat water, the Wetas thrived—sprinting across the lake in classic style. That evening, the sailors reconvened at the campsite, where the smell of grilled steaks filled the air and stories of daring bow-stuffing adventures were shared around a crackling campfire. The night was capped with music from Alan Taylor, whose guitar and Jimmy Buffet tunes set the perfect relaxed tone under the stars.
Saturday brought more of the same ideal weather, and four Wetas took to the course in tight, competitive racing. The close battles on the water highlighted not only the speed of the boats but the skill of their sailors. It was, by all accounts, a magical day of sailing—made possible by the tireless efforts of the Carolina Sailing Club and the volunteer race committee.
“It’s hard to explain how valuable our volunteer RC is,” one sailor noted. “It’s a gift from sailors to sailors—enabling us to do what we love.”
After a thrilling day, the sailors returned to the campsite for another evening of community and laughter. Hot dogs sizzled on the grill, the fire blazed again, and a few lighthearted rounds of the board game “Regatta” filled the night with friendly competition. Alan Taylor again serenaded the group before they turned in, happily worn out from a full day on the water.
Sunday dawned with optimism, but the wind didn’t cooperate. Despite the light breeze, the fleet launched with hope, only to have racing called off due to insufficient wind. Still, spirits remained high as the group pitched in to help Bill Croughwell shuttle his pontoon boat back to Satterwhite Point—a crucial piece of the weekend’s success since the club’s usual RC boat remained in the shop.
The weekend left a lasting impression on all who participated. Special thanks were extended to the Carolina Sailing Club’s Howard Mendlovitz and Jon Doyle for their determination and dedication in making the event happen despite logistical challenges.
“It was a precious gift,” said one sailor, summing up the sentiment of the group. “A truly unforgettable weekend, thanks to the heart and effort of Carolina Sailing Club.”

Awesome!!!
