Alligator Run, Lake Waccamaw 2025

My expectations weren’t all that high for the Alligator Run Regatta at Lake Waccamaw last weekend.  I’d been tracking the forecast all week.  There was a low northeast of Lake Ontario that was going to  drag a cold front across NC by the weekend, with a shortwave ahead of it.  That meant thunderstorms.  Through Thursday and Friday, the forecast said the first storms would hit eastern NC Saturday afternoon, with the biggest wind (behind the front) hitting Saturday night. The night was capped with music from Alan Taylor, whose guitar and Jimmy Buffet tunes set the perfect relaxed tone under the stars.

Saturday brought more of the same ideal weather, and four Wetas took to the course in tight, competitive racing. The close battles on the water highlighted not only…

by Chuck Carroll and Bruce Koch

The 2024 North American Championships, hosted by the Fort Walton Yacht Club from November 8–10, brought three days of exhilarating competition and camaraderie to sailors and spectators alike. Known for its casual southern hospitality, the Club exceeded expectations with its scenic waterfront, exceptional amenities, outstanding event coordination and race management. Attendees enjoyed daily breakfasts and dinners prepared by the club, adding a layer of comfort to the high-energy weekend.

The event saw 18 Weta trimarans take to the starting line in two separate fleets, 13 single-handers and five double-handers. We had participants from Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina and California. The seasoned race committee ensured smooth operations throughout all the races, delivering an experience worthy of a North American Championship event.

Day 1: A Perfect Kick-Off
