88th Annual Candler Regatta
This event was hosted by the St Andrews Bay Yacht Club, Panama City, with 2 days of racing, Saturday May 31st and Sunday June 1st. Registration was very reasonable, only $50 before May 20th and $70 after May 20th I got there Friday around 12 noon and rigged up and went out for a sail. I had never sailed in St Andrews Bay before so I thought it would be good to learn the area Friday afternoon before racing on Saturday. We had a solid 15 knots of wind from the South West. The Regatta Chair Gaby Cumbie worked very hard to make this Regatta a success. I posted this regatta on WhatsApp to the Northern Gulf Coast Weta group on May 23rd. I should have posted earlier. With all the Wetas in Ft Walton Beach close by, I was surprised to be the only Weta sailor there. Hopefully next year we will have a better turn out. I will get it posted on the Weta North America Class Web site early next year. Everyone there was very welcoming. They made it clear that they wanted more Weta Trimarans to come next year. They were interested in the Weta and I gave some demo rides after racing was over, on both Saturday and Sunday. I had a hotel room reserved, but at the Yacht Club Bar Friday night I ran into Trevor Batts who said I could stay at his house. The hotel gave me a refund so I stayed at Trevor's house. Trevor was on the Race Committee. Saturday AM and Sunday AM they had a great breakfast for racers. There was no wind Saturday AM so we didn't start racing until around 12:30 PM. The wind gradually built up to 12 knots with gusts slightly higher than that from the South West. I was racing the Hobie Waves and the 420's which was not really fair. After racing was over Saturday, I talked with the Race Committee officers John Farris and Nick Dees and asked if I could race with the Vipers on Sunday. They said I could but they would have start me 5 minutes after the Viper start. Since they had a 5 minute head start, it was hard to know how I did against the Vipers but I think I was going a similar speed both up wind and down wind. There was a nice party in the yacht club bar Saturday evening and there was a very loud Cannon that they fired a little after 7PM The Wind on Sunday was a repeat of Saturday, Very light until around Noon when it started slowly building and gradually reached around 10 knots gusting to 12 knots from the South West. There was a nice awards ceremony after racing on Sunday. Everyone I met there was very nice and I am definitely planning on racing there next year. I highly recommend this regatta for Weta sailors. It was a lot of fun.
