Removing carbon fiber (CF) tiller extension hollow pin
The rubber adapter on my CF tiller extension (possibly as old as 2013) finally gave it up. But when I went to remove the pin to be able to install the new tip, I came across a hollow pin that seems to rolled edges on both sides. As far as I know, it has to come out so I have been looking at options.
I tried hammering it out with new pin as the pusher, but I think the ends are wider than the hole.
I tried filing off the rolled ends, but stopped before making contact with the CF, so the edge could still be a little wider than the hole.
I started trying to drill it out, but decided to get some input before trying in full.
The hollow pin seems like it could be glued in place, but I think that could just be the ends holding it in place.
Looking for advice on how to proceed.
By the way, having it break off during a race could have been a day-ender, but I have my dual tillers both on top so I was able to keep sailing with just one. I like how that worked out.
I tried to upload a picture of it but it won't take.

Hello Jim, I assume you have purchased Ronstan part # RF3133 to fix this problem. The hollow rolled pin is probably stainless steel which is very hard metal and might take forever to drill out. If you used a drill bit too small to drill it out, but big enough to fit inside the the hollow pin snugly, with your drill, you might be able to rotate the pin when you pull the trigger on the drill, breaking the glue bond holding the pin in place. I would definitely wear safety glasses if you attempt this. It could break your drill bit or send other particles flying through the air. You could also use a machine screw the right size for its threads to fit snugly inside the hollow pin and try turning by hand to break the glue bond on the hollow pin. If you can't get the hollow pin out you may want to use a hack saw to cut the tiller extension where the pin goes through and drill a new hole for the pin that comes with RF 3133. If you do this, Your tiller extension will be only about 1 inch shorter which should not be a problem. If you need RF 3133 I have it in stock and could send it to you. $18 plus sales tax and shipping. Rick Upson
